Australia will face a different England in the Champions Trophy semi-final tomorrow from the “pussycats” they nearly whitewashed in the NatWest Series. That is the prediction of Graeme Swann, whose wish that the old rivals would go on to meet in the final were thwarted when Australia scrambled a last-ball win over Pakistan here yesterday.
Although England lost 6-1 — and were relieved to secure that consolation victory at the Riverside — Swann said that victories over Sri Lanka and South Africa have convinced a squad expecting to return home at the earliest opportunity that it is good enough to win a first global event.
That self-belief has survived the four-wicket defeat by New Zealand at the New Wanderers on Tuesday, with Swann and Andrew Strauss, the captain, emphasising the importance of the toss two days ago and suggesting that England will have better prospects at the semi-final venue of Centurion, which also stages the final on Monday.
Swann did not hide the truth. “Most of that series we were awful and we knew we were awful,” he said. “We talked about playing fearless cricket, but we came across as timid as pussycats. Something has clicked over here. We took confidence from beating Sri Lanka, then Owais Shah and Paul Collingwood came to life against South Africa.
