South Africa will be relieved to not have to deal with the openers but they still have puzzles in their own game to solve. They were soundly beaten in Gwalior and got close in the first ODI only because of Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell’s performances – with the bat. Their batting order, apart from AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis, hasn’t pulled its weight. They will hope Hashim Amla can build on the momentum he showed in a cameo in the second ODI but, in the absence of Graeme Smith, much depends on Herschelle Gibbs.

The pitch had something for the seamers and the Indian batting line-up folded cheaply. South Africa might not get the pitches necessary to exploit India’s vulnerability but it’s bound to be an interesting battle.

This three-match series will offer a greater Test for South Africa. They will miss Graeme Smith and without him the top order, even with the inclusion of the in-form Hashim Amla, doesn’t have the same strength. Much will depend on AB de Villiers, who had a quiet Test series, if they are to put up totals around 300.

The first game is huge for India ahead of the 2011 World Cup as Jaipur has faced some terror threats and the cricket world will be watching how the security issue is handled. It’s been reported that there will be unprecedented levels of security: the Indian Air Force will be manning the skies and the police have divided the city into five centers – the airport, the route leading to the hotel and stadium, the team hotel, and one each inside and outside the stadium.

Jonathan Trott and Joe Denly strode out to form their country’s 15th opening partnership in 24 Twenty20 matches, but between them they mustered five runs from 13 balls.

It has affected the bowlers’ grip and forced the spinners to bowl it flat, reluctant to give the ball air for fear of bowling a friendly full toss. Imagine the plight for a team like Bangladesh, which thrives on its spinners. Mushfiqur Rahim, the wicketkeeper, said his team have been practicing with a wet ball in the nets to get used to the dew.

Dew apart, Tuesday’s defeat to Sri Lanka was an eye-opener for India. Their death bowling has been erratic in recent one-dayers and it was reflected in the crucial final stages of the chase when they dished out full tosses and no-balls in attempting to target the base of the stumps. The Rajkot ODI – where they defended 414 by the skin of their teeth – was an example of excellent death bowling, but they haven’t been able to replicate that consistently. Even their best death bowler, Zaheer Khan, had a poor outing on Tuesday. With no bowling coach at their disposal, there may not be enough time to rectify that weakness but the best India and Bangladesh can do is to score a mountain of runs as a safety net.

Bangladesh will be expected to be far more potent if they bowl first. They will have to look at ways to contain India rather than attack them, because they could leak runs in the process. Against Sri Lanka, their top order wilted after a good start more due to carelessness, before Mohammad Ashraful led the recovery. Bangladesh certainly have more on their plate, but they will feel a lot better if they win that toss.
