Cricinfo.com : Four months have elapsed since England achieved their crowning glory of 2009, against Australia on August 23, when Andrew Strauss lifted the Ashes following his team’s 197-run victory in the fifth Test at The Oval. For South Africa, meanwhile, it is a year to the month since they themselves reached Nirvana, Down Under in December 2008, when they won their first Test series in Australia with a brace of stunning victories at Perth and Melbourne.
Now, the two teams come head-to-head in a contest that could yet prove to be the most compelling series of the year. England and South Africa have vied and tussled for the upper hand ever since their first meeting of the post-Apartheid era in 1994 – in that time, South Africa have won three series to England’s two, with two drawn rubbers, although neither side has yet managed a series win by more than a single Test’s margin.
As England demonstrated back in 2005 (but are now at pains to disprove four years later), there is a danger inherent in overcoming Australia – particularly where these two teams are concerned. Subconsciously or otherwise, it can be regarded as an end in itself rather than a means, and much to South Africa’s chagrin, they squandered their ascendancy – and ultimately their title of No. 1 side in the world – by allowing themselves to be overturned on home soil by a rookie Australian line-up in the return series in March, which also happens to have been their most recent Test encounter.

England had plenty concerns at the start of the tour when they were barely able to rustle up 11 fit men, but one by one the wounded are returning to the fray. Stuart Broad has overcome his shoulder problem and seems likely to slot in in place of Sajid Mahmood, while Graeme Swann has resumed training after a side strain, and could yet replace Rashid, unless the management take a punt on the uncapped offspinner, James Tredwell. Meanwhile, the unexpected success of Tim Bresnan as a new-ball sidekick to James Anderson has expanded the options available to his captain.
The ICC has confirmed that the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will be used during South Africa’s home Test series against England next month.
The use of reviews for the forthcoming series in South Africa had been uncertain because of doubts over the home board’s willingness to help fund the technology, but the ICC has now confirmed that the system will be in place.
South Africa coach Mickey Arthur welcomed the use of the system. “I’m all in favour of anything which helps to reach the correct decision but, in an ideal world, that would mean having the same system in place all over the world,” he said.
A review system was trialled last year, but a reluctance to cede power from the onfield officials meant that the third umpire was prevented from using all the available technology, and this fudged process led to a series of notable mishaps – not least during the first Test in Jamaica, when Ramnaresh Sarwan was reprieved by guesswork after the onfield umpire Tony Hill had given him out lbw.

If South Africa stick to their pre-series talk of giving all the squad a game it means some shuffling of the pack. Heino Kuhn is in line for a debut – Mark Boucher could be rested – while Jacques Kallis will return, although purely as a batsman, and Yusuf Abdulla, the left-arm seamer, is another pace option.
South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Loots Bosman, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Albie Morkel, 6 Heino Kuhn (wk), 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Yusuf Abdulla
England are carrying a number of players with minor niggles. Collingwood (back), Anderson (knee) and Swann (side) all missed training as a precaution and face morning fitness tests ahead of the game. With Stuart Broad still recovering from his shoulder injury, Kevin Pietersen not due to return until Tuesday and Andrew Strauss opting out of Twenty20 the squad could be stretched. Adil Rashid and Graham Onions are the two players who didn’t appear in the opening match.
England (possible) 1 Joe Denly, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood (capt), 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Sajid Mahmood, 11 James Anderson

England’s fast-bowling department has been stretched so far and Stuart Broad will miss this match and probably the second one as well. However, James Anderson is available after resting a sore knee, but the lack of action for Graham Onions could count against his selection despite his back problem clearing up. Alastair Cook is an unconvincing option as opener, but with Kevin Pietersen not yet quite ready to return and Strauss opting out of Twenty20 he is there by default, although a throat infection could keep him out.
South Africa, on the other hand, were hitting their stride against Zimbabwe with a crushing 212-run victory in the second ODI at Centurion. The home side will use the Twenty20s as a chance to give all the players in the squad a run, with the exception of the injured Wayne Parnell, but there is also the need to prepare for next year’s ICC World Twenty20. For both teams the next two matches could be the only Twenty20 games they play before that global event in West Indies.
