Like on the first day, Sri Lanka won the first session by a fair distance, getting Rahul Dravid for no addition to his overnight 177, taking four wickets for 41, and then batting out a testing 35 minutes before lunch circumspectly but without loss.

Chanaka Welegedara got the big wicket of Dravid early, and while the Indian tail threatened to run amok for a brief while, smart tactics and bowling from Sri Lanka will please them for having taken the last four wickets for 41 runs. India did close to the best comeback from a similar score: in 1998-99 West Indies went from 34 for 4 to score 431 for 1 against Australia in Jamaica.

The way Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan started against the pace of Welegedara and Dammika Prasad, driving, cutting, and upper-cutting with ease, it seemed they would get much more. Despite Dravid’s played-on dismissal – fifth man out of seven to get out either lbw or bowled – the runs started coming at the same pace as yesterday.

Harbhajan hit both the pace bowlers for boundaries through covers before Zaheer upper-cut back-to-back deliveries from Prasad for fours. Twenty-one runs came in the first six overs, despite a maiden bowled to Dravid, and Kumar Sangakkara immediately went in for an in-and-out field, drying out easy boundaries, making the tailenders play normal cricketing shots.

Introduction of spin at both ends further stifled them, as even good shots would get them just ones. An arm ball from Rangana Herath, more a finger ball actually, breaking in sharply after pitching, got Zaheer although it did seem too close to missing the leg stump to be given. That capped off a quiet spell of 5.2 overs for eight runs, the quietest of the match.

Harbhajan looked stifled and started getting adventurous, his second attempt at a reverse-sweep off Muttiah Muralitharan making him the seventh man to get either bowled or lbw. Harbhajan scored 22, Zaheer 12. In the same over, Murali beat Ishant Sharma with a doosra and Prasanna Jayawardene ended the innings with a quick stumping.

Indian new-ball bowlers didn’t get the kind of swing that Welegedara got, but they came out with a plan. Tillakaratne Dilshan’s favourite scoring options were blocked, and Zaheer welcomed him with three consecutive bouncers first up, with deep point, deep fine leg and deep backward square leg all in place. Dilshan showed he had other aspects to his game too, cutting out aggressive shots and taking singles after hitting straight to Ishant Sharma at mid-on. Dilshan’s partner, Tharanga Paranavitana, had a more uncertain start, slashing outside off when not given scoring opportunities.

Two of those slashes carried over the infield, and then when Harbhajan was introduced just before lunch, he square-cut confidently. Dilshan stepped out to Harbhajan immediately, looking to unsettle him. In the last over before lunch, Dilshan opened up, crashing Zaheer for two boundaries through cover, emphasising as to who was in control on the second morning.

Rahul Dravid played as purposefully as he has ever done in Test cricket to lead India’s comeback from 32 for 4 in the first half hour. Along the way, he got involved in his 77th 100-run partnership, a world record, came seven short of passing Steve Waugh to become the fifth-highest run-getter in Tests, and also undid the superb start that two rookies provided Sri Lanka with. Chanaka Welegedara and Dammika Prasad – four Tests and 15 wickets between them – were not even supposed to play this match but pair combined to give India flashbacks of their previous Test in Ahmedabad, when they were shot out for 76 by South Africa.

Test cricket it might be, but it rattled along at a breathtaking pace and refused to slow even with wickets falling. Even when Dravid and Yuvraj Singh hurtled along during their 125-run stand, Kumar Sangakkara kept attacking fields in. The start that he got allowed him to do so.

The first day of the Test season got off to an unusual start too: Welegedara, in the side for an injured Nuwan Kulasekara, attacked Gautam Gambhir’s stumps, who blocked and ran, and Virender Sehwag caressed the next delivery through the covers. Another boundary came in the next over, and it started looking ominous for Sri Lanka.

But Welegedara had got the ball to swing, and it played on Gambhir’s mind when he poked almost outside the line of a straight delivery and played it on. Sehwag continued attacking and succeeding until Welegedara produced a perfect inswinger; the umpire Tony Hill adjudged a perfect lbw decision, ruling that the ball hit the pad first and in front of middle and off.

Out came Sachin Tendulkar, 20 years and a day old in international cricket, at 27 for 2. Out came a perfect cover-drive first ball. And out went Tendulkar, at 31 for 3, having played outside the line of a ball that slightly held its line. Prasad got into action soon when VVS Laxman dragged one on, playing away from the body and done in by slight inward movement.

All four wickets came attacking the stumps and Sri Lanka continued doing just that. Dravid and Yuvraj, having realised this wasn’t a beast to bat on, counterattacked. Dravid got going through late clips off his pads, Yuvraj through a thick edge past gully. Immediately, though, Yuvraj corrected it with a picture-perfect cover-drive. Sangakkara perhaps missed a trick by introducing Angelo Mathews before Muttiah Muralitharan, and both Yuvraj and Dravid enjoyed the gentle pace and length balling. A couple of classy shots from Dravid later, the two had added 34 in 32 deliveries even before Murali was introduced.

Yuvraj faced the first over from Murali. The high back lift kept everybody interested, but he showed good judgement of the topspinner and regular offbreak. Driving through the line looked easy while the two were at it. Rangana Herath – playing ahead of Ajantha Mendis – was taken for a six by Dravid and a four by Yuvraj when he was introduced about 20 minutes before lunch.

Post lunch, too, the duo kept attacking. Dravid saw off Welegedara’s swing with three boundaries in one over that summed up how well he played. One of the them was clipped late, to the right of midwicket, the next was cover-driven all along the ground, and the third flicked to the left of midwicket – all despite the swing. The first one of those brought up his fifty in 79 balls, outscoring Yuvraj.

Yuvraj’s innings wasn’t as spotless, despite three high-elbow off-drives for the photo album. Prasad, in his later spells either side of lunch, found his body with bouncers. Yuvraj bottom-edged a pull for four, upper-cut over slips for another, but then made his first outright mistake in Murali’s next over, the bowler’s seventh. He stepped out, saw he was beaten in the flight, but as opposed to thrusting his pad forward, he presented it both bat and pad.

That wicket gone, Dravid and MS Dhoni came hard at Sri Lanka again. Outstanding were two drives from Dravid against Murali: one against the spin through extra cover, the other straight down the ground. By tea, the two had added 64 and Dravid had survived his first error: edging a doosra just short of first slip.

If South Africa stick to their pre-series talk of giving all the squad a game it means some shuffling of the pack. Heino Kuhn is in line for a debut – Mark Boucher could be rested – while Jacques Kallis will return, although purely as a batsman, and Yusuf Abdulla, the left-arm seamer, is another pace option.

South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Loots Bosman, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Albie Morkel, 6 Heino Kuhn (wk), 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Yusuf Abdulla

England are carrying a number of players with minor niggles. Collingwood (back), Anderson (knee) and Swann (side) all missed training as a precaution and face morning fitness tests ahead of the game. With Stuart Broad still recovering from his shoulder injury, Kevin Pietersen not due to return until Tuesday and Andrew Strauss opting out of Twenty20 the squad could be stretched. Adil Rashid and Graham Onions are the two players who didn’t appear in the opening match.

England (possible) 1 Joe Denly, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood (capt), 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Sajid Mahmood, 11 James Anderson

Brendon McCullum, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, is not looking too much into defeat to Pakistan in the first Twenty20. McCullum oversaw a 49-run loss in the first of two fixtures after New Zealand lost Daniel Vettori to a concussion, Kyle Mills to a shoulder injury and Jacob Oram to paternal leave, but was not too crushed at defeat against the world champions.

McCullum’s decision to field was prompted to a degree by Australia’s capitulation for 108 at the same venue in May, but it proved a costly one as Pakistan raced to 160 thanks largely to the opener Imran Nazir’s 38-ball 58. “We looked at the stats and looked at the pitch and thought it might offer some assistance to the bowlers,” McCullum said. “I thought it did that – we just didn’t execute as well as what we should’ve with our fourth and fifth bowler. I think 140 was probably a par score.”

In their chase, New Zealand were forced to bring on a half-fit James Franklin as a substitute when Aaron Redmond (who didn’t come out to bat) picked up a groin strain while bowling. Despite that setback, McCullum said he believed New Zealand could succeed. “You always think it’s a chaseable target. If they had got 300 I’d still believe we were capable of winning. 160 was more than what we wanted to give up, it was more than what the par was but I still believed we were going to be a good enough team to chase it down.”

England’s fast-bowling department has been stretched so far and Stuart Broad will miss this match and probably the second one as well. However, James Anderson is available after resting a sore knee, but the lack of action for Graham Onions could count against his selection despite his back problem clearing up. Alastair Cook is an unconvincing option as opener, but with Kevin Pietersen not yet quite ready to return and Strauss opting out of Twenty20 he is there by default, although a throat infection could keep him out.

South Africa, on the other hand, were hitting their stride against Zimbabwe with a crushing 212-run victory in the second ODI at Centurion. The home side will use the Twenty20s as a chance to give all the players in the squad a run, with the exception of the injured Wayne Parnell, but there is also the need to prepare for next year’s ICC World Twenty20. For both teams the next two matches could be the only Twenty20 games they play before that global event in West Indies.

England squad
